A variety of factors can cause noise issues during recording. This may manifest as background hissing, humming, whining, or random clicks and crackles. You may also experience digital distortion if your input gain is too high or if the audio starts to clip. This article will help you identify, troubleshoot, and eliminate these disruptions to ensure clean recordings.
How they sound: Constant low-frequency hums that never stop
Caused by: Electrical ground loops, charging bricks, Background fan noise, electrical noise
Solutions:
Use the Denoise Tool: Right-click (PC) or tap (Mobile) your recorded Audio Region, open the action menu, and select Denoise to automatically filter out baseline background hums.
- Add a Noise Gate FX: Open the Fx menu at the bottom of the Studio, add a Noise Gate, and adjust the threshold so the microphone automatically mutes itself when you aren't singing or playing.
- Unplug Your Charger: If recording on a phone or laptop, tracking while plugged into a cheap wall adapter often injects electrical hum. Unplug the device and run on battery power while recording.
How they sound: A fuzzy, white-noise hiss in the background.
Caused by: This typically occurs when your microphone input level or hardware preamp is pushed too hard to compensate for a quiet performance.
Solutions:
- Use the Denoise Tool: Right-click (PC) or tap (Mobile) your recorded Audio Region, open the action menu, and select Denoise to automatically filter out baseline background hums.
- Add a Noise Gate FX: Open the Fx menu at the bottom of the Studio, add a Noise Gate, and adjust the threshold so the microphone automatically mutes itself when you aren't singing or playing.
- Fix Gain Staging in Studio: Move closer to your microphone or sing louder so you can lower your hardware input gain control. Adjusting the digital track fader later is cleaner than over-amplifying a weak input signal.
- Graphic EQ Roll-Off: Open your track's FX panel, add an EQ, and gently pull down the highest frequency sliders (around 8kHz and up) to dull out baseline static hiss.
How they sound: Sudden glitches, stuttering, or dropouts during recording or playback.
Caused by: Your web browser or mobile device runs out of processing power to handle the multi-track layout in real-time.
Solutions:
- Freeze Heavy Tracks: Tap the Fader Icon (bottom left), select the triple-dot menu on any completed or effect-heavy tracks, and tap Freeze Track*. This temporary bounce lightens your CPU load immensely.
- Close all other applications, especially games and multimedia apps
- Go to airplane mode and turn off wifi during recording (no network activity, less background work on the cpu)
- Try plugging in another recording/listening device. Try with regular headphones without mic. Or try with a USB interface/adapter.
- Enable safe audio on android
- Disable battery saver, charge the device.
How they sound: Heavy, distorted bass thuds occurring on vocal words utilising "P", "B", or "T" consonants.
Caused by: A blast of air over-pressuring your microphone capsule.
Solutions:
- Pop Filter: Use a pop filter for your Microphone
- Mic Techniques: Angle your microphone to avoid direct contact with the Microphone's diaphragm. We recommend placing your microphone at a 45-degree angle and being 4-7 inches for a good recording distance if you're using a condenser microphone
- Apply a High-Pass Filter Preset: Add an Equaliser effect from BandLab's Fx browser. Turn down the low frequencies completely below 80Hz–100Hz to strip out muddy wind blasts without altering your natural vocal tone.
- Adjust Phone Placement: When recording straight into a mobile device without an external pop filter, angle the phone slightly to the side of your mouth rather than speaking directly down into the microphone port.
How they sound:
- Traffic & Outdoor Noise: Cars, motorcycles, buses, trains, aircraft, weather (wind, rain, thunder), and construction.
- People & Animals: Conversations, footsteps, crowds, birds chirping, dogs barking, and other background activity.
- Appliances & Indoor Noise: Fans, TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, computer fans, HVAC systems, and other household or office equipment.
Caused by:
- Untreated Room: A room with inadequate acoustic treatment and poor sound isolation.
- No Sound Isolation: Recording near windows, doors, or other sources of external noise.
- Noisy Environment: Recording in environments with persistent background noise, such as from appliances or other ongoing sounds.
Solutions:
- Record in a quieter environment: Choose a room with minimal outside noise and close windows and doors before recording.
- Reduce background noise: Turn off or move away from fans, air conditioners, televisions, and other noise-producing devices.
- Position the microphone correctly: Keep the microphone close to the sound source to capture your voice more clearly while minimising background noise.
How they sound: Room acoustic issues are unwanted changes to a recording caused by the way sound reflects, reverberates, and resonates within a room, affecting the clarity and naturalness of the recording.
Caused by: Sound waves from your voice or instrument bouncing off hard, bare surfaces (like uncovered walls, hardwood floors, or windows) and echoing back into the microphone.
Solutions:
- Introduce Soft Furnishings: Break up hard reflections by covering bare spaces. Hang heavy blankets, draw the curtains, or lay down rugs near your recording area to absorb stray sound waves.
- User Absorbers and Reflectors: Treat the room with absorbers and reflectors on crucial spaces
- Mind Your Microphone Distance: Move closer to the microphone (around 4–6 inches away) and lower your input gain. This increases the ratio of direct voice to room echo, making the natural room reflections much less noticeable.
Note: If tracking vocals, try recording inside or facing directly into an open clothing closet. The hanging clothes act as excellent, natural acoustic absorbers.
