How do I prepare my mix for mastering?

Our engineers at BandLab have a simple rule of thumb: Mastering can take a good mix and make it great, but it cannot fix a problem mix.

Rules for your final mix:

  • Avoid Clipping: Ensure your track doesn't clip the red line. Distortion cannot be removed during mastering.
  • Leave Headroom: Don't over-compress. Aim for your pre-mastering mix to sit between -8 dB and -4 dB.
  • Watch the Effects: Avoid heavy master bus effects. A little global reverb is fine, but don't overdo it.
  • Frequency Balance: Listen for "muddy" bass and use a high-pass filter if necessary. Use reductive EQ to highlight important sonic aspects.
  • Rest your ears: Take 10 minutes of silence for every hour of producing to avoid ear fatigue.
  • File Formats: We support WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, AMR, MKV, AC3, WMA, ASF, and MP4.
