Understanding Song rights

What are Performance and Mechanical rights?

  • Performance Rights: Royalties generated when your song is broadcast or performed publicly (e.g., radio, live venues, television, and streaming platforms). These are collected by PROs like ASCAP, BMI, or PRS.
  • Mechanical Rights: Royalties generated every time a copy of your musical composition is reproduced, whether physically (CDs, vinyl) or digitally (interactive streaming on Spotify/Apple Music and digital downloads).

How does SoundExchange work?

While PROs collect royalties for the composition, SoundExchange collects and distributes digital performance royalties for the sound recording (the master). If your track is played on non-interactive digital radio (like SiriusXM or Pandora), SoundExchange ensures the featured artists and master copyright owners get paid.
